. Tournament COMPETITIONS AND Formats

Individual Competition

Flighting
"Flights" are used for all individual stroke play competition. Flights provide equitable competition between players with comparable handicaps. All players are flighted using their Stroke Index for that course, from the lowest stroke index to the highest. The total number of players in the tournament determines the number of Flights. To help maintain equitable competition, Flights may vary in size depending on handicap spreads.

Medal Play (Individual Stroke Play)
Players compete against all other players within their Flight, using full handicaps. The player with the lowest net score round within each Flight wins that Flight. Second lowest net score wins 2nd place, third lowest net score wins 3rd place, etc.

Modified Stableford (Individual Stroke Play)
A variation of Medal Play, with Flights, but hole-by-hole scoring is on a point system. Net Double Eagle = 8 points, Net Eagle = 5 points, Net Birdie = 2 points, Net Par = 0 points, Net Bogie = minus 1 point, Net Bogie or more = minus 3 points. The player with the highest point total within each Flight wins that Flight. Second highest point total wins 2nd place, etc.

Skins
Players compete against all other players within their Flight in Skins competition. Each Skin Flight will compete in two competitions.

Gross Skins (60% of Player Pool fund): A Skin is won if only one player has the lowest Gross Score recorded for that hole. If more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner.

Net Skins (40% of Player Pool fund): A Skin is won if only one player has the lowest Net Score recorded for that hole. If more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner.

Skins Player Pool is determined by the total number of players in the field and each Skins Flight receives 50% of the total Player Pool pot.

Team Competition
The total number of players and teams in the tournament will determine the number of Team Flights, either one or two Flights. You can form your own 2 Player or 4 Player teams or sign up as individuals and you will be randomly drawn and placed on a team with other individuals by the Tournament Director.

2-Player Best Ball

2-Player Best Ball - Restricted Handicaps

Teams may play with a spread of less than 7 strokes but their team handicap spread will be adjusted to 7…..(example: player A handicap is 4 and player B handicap is 5 which results in a deficit of 6 strokes to meet the minimum 7 stroke spread. The team handicap for player A will be reduced to a 1 and player B handicap will be reduced to a 2. Same scoring will apply.

2-Player Best Ball + Bonus
Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. The One Low Net Score of the team for each hole will be used for the team score. • Both the green ball and the regular ball are played until holed out.
  • The Low Net Score of the Team for each hole, be it the green ball or the regular ball, will be used for the team score. The team that posts the lowest net score without losing the green ball wins. The team with the second lowest net team score without losing the green ball is 2nd, etc. If all green balls are lost prior to completion of 18 holes, the team who completes the most holes prior to losing their green ball wins.

This is one of CTGA's most popular formats every year.

Player B is DH on holes #2, 6, 11, and 15; player C on #3, 7, 12, and 16; and player D on #4, 8, 13, and 17. Each team members plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. The net score of the DH and the lowest net score of the other 3 players will be used for the team score on each hole. The second lowest team net score is 2nd, etc.
  2. Designated Hitters are determined by Handicap Holes. Player A is designated hitter (DH) on handicap holes #1, 2, 3, and 4. Player B is DH on handicap holes #5, 6, 7, 8; player C on handicap holes #9, 10, 11, 12; player D on handicap holes #13, 14, 15, 16. No DH for handicap holes #17 and 18. Scoring (All Net):

  • Par = 0 points
  • Birdie = 1 point
  • Eagle = 2
  • Bogie = -1
  • Double Bogie = -2, etc.

A bonus point is awarded if all 4 players (net scores) par the hole.

Examples:

  • 3 pars and 1 bogie = 0 points (since the 3 pars = Quota)
  • 4 pars = +1 point (the 4th par is the bonus point)
  • 3 pars and 1 birdie = +2 points (bonus point for the 4th score better than bogie + 1 point for the birdie)
  • 2 pars and 2 bogies = -1 point
  • 1 birdie, 1 par, 2 bogies = 0 points
  • 1 birdie and 3 bogies = -1 point

The team with the lowest net score wins. The team with the second lowest net score is 2nd, etc.

4-Player ABCD Scramble
Team handicap will be a percentage of the cumulative individual handicaps of the 4 Team players. After all team members hit their Tee shots, the team will select the best tee shot and all players hit from that spot. The best 2nd shot will be determined and all players hit from that spot, etc., until the ball is holed out. The total number of strokes for each hole will be used for the team score. Unlike all other formats above where individual or team net scores determine winners, the adjusted Team handicap will be used to determine team scores. The team with the lowest net team score wins. The team with the second lowest net team score is 2nd, etc.

Close-to-Pin Competition
All CTGA events will include a Close-To-Pin (CTP) competition with no additional fee required. All players are separated into 2 "CTP Flights" using their tournament handicap, from the lowest handicap to the highest. Each CTP Flight will compete on two designated Par 3 holes. Winner of a CTP hole will be the player whose ball, on the green, is measured closest to the hole.

Note: CTP applies only to the first shot attempt from the teeing area and the ball must come to rest on the green.

And the Winner Is…
In all tournaments, if multiple Players or Teams within a Flight post identical low net scores, the 1st place winner is determined by a scorecard playoff using USGA recommended guidelines.

Optional CTGA Competitions

Closest-to-the-pin
All CTGA events will include a Close-To-Pin (CTP) competition with no additional fee required. All tournaments will have two (2) "CTP Flights", with Flights determined by player handicaps. Each CTP Flight will compete on two designated Par 3 holes. Winner of a CTP hole will be the player whose ball, on the green, is measured closest to the hole.
Note: CTP applies only to the first shot attempt from the teeing area and the ball must come to rest on the green

Skins
Cost to enter Skins is $5.00. Gross scores will be used to determine Skin winners for each hole. A skin is won if only one player has the lowest gross score recorded for that hole. If more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner. The Skins pot is determined by the number of Skins players within each Skins Flight and will be shared by the number of skins won within that Skins Flight.

Deuces
Cost to enter Deuces is $5.00. Gross scores will be used to determine Deuce winners. All players who have natural 2’s on their scorecard share in the Deuce pot. The Deuce pot is determined by the number of Deuce players within the Deuce Flight and will be shared by the total number of 2’s made. If no Deuces are recorded at a given tournament, the Deuce pot will carry over to the next tournament, etc., until a Deuce winner is declared.

Note: A Hole-In-One is a 1 on the scorecard and will not be counted as credit toward a Deuce.

All players will be entered in our Optional Skins and Deuces competitions unless they “opt out” prior to their scheduled start time. Skins and Deuces Flights will be the same as the Close-To-Pin Flights.
